PLAY: Artists Look at Childhood is the second exhibition in Gallery One Visual Art Center’s celebration of their 40th anniversary year. In this show, 10 artists examine or reflect upon their personal experiences of childhood: how memory lingers, how we enhance or diminish specific moments, and how these moments affect our feelings and end up defining us for the rest of our lives. The focus here is more nuance than trauma with consideration of the intense yearnings and longings fired by active imaginations or inexperienced references that a child feels. Many people carry with them the weight of disappointment and/or the confusion of adolescence that they felt at some point in their developing years. This exhibition explores those feelings with humor, nostalgia and bewilderment.
