Installation of Bellingham Series at Western

At the end of last summer I received a request by the Art Department at Western Washington University to contribute some photographs to the Undergraduate Advising Office. I choose my Bellingham Series because I think the photographs in this series are aesthetically pleasing, but also have an underlying message. There are five images in this installation as well as an artist statement. Special thanks to Samantha DeSoer, Alina Brown, and Facilities Management for completing the installation. The office is located in Old Main room 210B; go take a look and tell me what you think.

American Photo Awards Ceremony

Sophia's Drama, Act I
This image of my youngest daughter Sophia ended up winning an honorable mention at the American Photo "Images of the Year Competition." I'd never been to anything like the award ceremony, it was great. Here are some images of the event.. The Gallery event featured prints of the grand prize and category winners as well as a video projection of all the images that made it into the special issue. The event took place on Dec 6th at Splashlight Studios in New York.
There were over 4,000 entries and 83 images made it into the Special Jan/Feb Issue, "Images of the Year Competition," that will be on shelves for the next two months. American Photo has a circulation of about a quarter million so I'm very excited. You can find my image on page 74.
Here is the online article from American Photo's website. If you click on the photo gallery my image 42 of 83.
Some of the category award winners included well known photographers like Annie Leibovitz and Michael Grecco. Who knows how much money, influence, and time it takes to set up some of their photographs? One of the photographers that I meet at the awards ceremony was Adam Makarenko, who was a co-winner in the Personal Work category. He ended up creating his set in his bedroom and took the award winning photograph with a cheap point and shoot camera.

The B-Gallery is located within the Fine Arts Building on Western's main campus. The exhibition is open from Dec 4th to Dec 14th. Here are some installation photographs. If I didn't photograph your work, I'm sorry, but some of it was already taken down by the time I returned from New York.

Homage to Moholy-Nagy

Homage to Laszlo Moholy-Nagy
Several months ago a friend of mine gave me a gift card to a book store. One of the books I purchased with the card contained several photographs of László Moholy-Nagy's paintings which I had never seen before. One of these paintings, "A XX," from 1924 really captured my imagination for several reasons. First it was almost exclusively whites, grays, and blacks. Secondarily, I found the overlapping geometric shapes as well as the transparency between forms very interesting. I had previously seen Moholy-Nagy's sculptures and photographs and was throughly impressed with their abstract and surreal qualities.
Several times a year I like to make a master study in photography or painting. I don't aim for an exact reproduction, but try to take some elements of the original that I am particularly attracted to. The major changes that I made to this painting mostly have to do with the addition of colors.
