Homage to Moholy-Nagy

Homage to Laszlo Moholy-Nagy

Several months ago a friend of mine gave me a gift card to a book store. One of the books I purchased with the card contained several photographs of László Moholy-Nagy's paintings which I had never seen before. One of these paintings, "A XX," from 1924 really captured my imagination for several reasons. First it was almost exclusively whites, grays, and blacks. Secondarily, I found the overlapping geometric shapes as well as the transparency between forms very interesting. I had previously seen Moholy-Nagy's sculptures and photographs and was throughly impressed with their abstract and surreal qualities.

Several times a year I like to make a master study in photography or painting. I don't aim for an exact reproduction, but try to take some elements of the original that I am particularly attracted to. The major changes that I made to this painting mostly have to do with the addition of colors.
